In these cases, an inlay or an onlay can be a great solution.
Dental inlays and onlays are a way to repair and strengthen a tooth that has a significant amount of damage or decay, including if it has fractured or cracked.
We make all our inlays and onlays from porcelain, which is long lasting and does not stain. The colour can exactly match the tooth and those around it, so it will be virtually invisible in your mouth.
An inlay is used to repair the centre of the tooth, or the flatter part. An onlay is used when the damage also extends to the raised parts of the tooth, so this is a bigger restoration than an inlay.
Treating damage and decay with an inlay or an onlay can help to save the healthy tooth structure that is remaining, meaning that you can avoid more extensive – and expensive – treatment, such as a dental crown.
I think Slavek's a very good dentist. Really patient with you and explains fully what treatment you're going to have.
If your dentist recommends a dental inlay or onlay to treat a damaged tooth, they will take the time to carefully examine your mouth and teeth, and answer any questions you may have, to help you decide if this is the right treatment for you.
If you choose to go ahead, you will usually need two appointments to have your inlay or onlay fitted. The first of these will allow your clinician to numb the area and remove any damage or decay. The tooth will then be cleaned and shaped so an impression can be taken and sent to the lab in order to make your bespoke dental inlay or onlay.
At your second appointment the tooth will again be carefully cleaned before the new inlay or onlay is securely fixed in place using a strong dental cement. Your dentist will carefully make sure it feels comfortable when you bite and close your mouth, so it will feel just like your natural tooth when you eat, drink and smile.
By using porcelain for our inlays and onlays, our patients can enjoy a fantastic, durable and long-lasting solution to damaged or decayed teeth.
It is always important to maintain the best possible oral health to ensure the new inlay can last as long as possible.
We would always recommend that you have regular hygiene therapy appointments to help you understand the best way to look after your teeth at home, and so our dental hygienists can make sure the treated tooth and the rest of your mouth stays as healthy and clean as possible.
